Cervical Screening / Smear Tests

A cervical smear test is a quick, easy and reliable way of detecting abnormal cells at the neck of the cervix.  These cells can lead to cancer if they are not treated early

A smear test takes just a few minutes and whilst the procedure can be a little uncomfortable, most women do not experience any pain.

Woman aged between 25-49 should have a smear test done every 3 years and for women aged between 50-64 it should be performed every 5 years.

Our nurses are fully trained to put you at ease and you are welcome to bring someone with you or ask for a chaperone to be present if this would help you.

The results will be sent to you in the post in approximately 2/3 weeks after the test has been carried out.  If you receive an abnormal result, don't panic!  You may be referred to another clinic for treatment (called Colposcopy) or you may be asked to have a repeat smear test in a few months.

If you have had a hysterectomy (unless it was for cancer) or have never been sexually active - you will not need to have a smear test.

You can call reception to book an appointment at a time convenient to you, or you can book online via the Patient Access App   If you do not have patient access, please let us know and we can help you to set this up
